SPRINGFIELD- Starting January 1st, 2025, Illinois will formally recognize the United States Space Force as an official branch of the United States Armed Forces. This is an outcome of legislation sponsored by State Senator Tom Bennett (R-Gibson City) to recognize and honor the dedication and innovation of those in the United States Space Force.
“Recognizing the United Space Force as a distinct branch of our military honors the remarkable efforts of those who defend our interests in space,” said Sen. Bennett. “I am honored to have sponsored this bill. I believe their work is crucial to maintaining our nation’s leadership in space.”
Governor Pritzker recently signed House Bill 5640, sponsored by Senator Tom Bennett that changes state law to include the Space Force wherever the Armed Forces are mentioned.
The United States Space Force, established on December 20, 2019, is designated as an armed force within the Department of the Air Force. The Space Force’s mission is to ensure the U.S. can operate freely in space, manage space operations, and protect American interests.
